Product Detail:

Mary Ann Signorelli graduated from Charity Hospital School of Nursing in 1946.  She was part of the Cadet Nurse Corps, a program created to address the nursing shortage caused by World War II. Mary Ann served as ship’s nurse on the USNS General Hersey (where she met Richard Whynot, the ship’s navigation officer) and on the USNS General Stewart carrying displaced persons from Europe to the US, Canada, Australia and South America after the war. Mary Ann and Richard were married and both served in the US Army Transportation Services and U.S. Navy Military Sea Transportation Services during the Korean War. Mary Ann worked as a nurse at Charity Hospital for a time, but as Richard’s military career took him around the country, she traveled with him, working as a nurse in Illinois, New York, Massachusetts, Michigan and Washington.  Richard rose to the rank of Captain, commanding in the US Coast Guard Reserve, later becoming a civilian engineer and consultant.  After retiring Richard became a researcher and lecturer on military and Spanish Colonial history, and Mary Ann served as a volunteer nurse for the American Red Cross. Mary Ann passed away in 2003 and Richard created a scholarship for Charity nursing students in her memory.  Richard passed away in 2017, and their family has chosen to continue the Mary Ann Signorelli Whynot Scholarship in both their memories.
